Two polar friends - Pookie the penguin and Tushka the polar bear - find a little piano in the ice one day. There is all sorts of possibility for learning wrapped into this book and I think it does so very well.more In addition, the end of the book has all sorts of fun facts about the animals and environments mentioned. Even still I will encourage my students to read it and reflect on it. If I had discovered this book when I was young, it would have instantly made its way into my frequent rereading rotation. Cute illustrations that look like colored pencil, a cute friendship where they lift each other up, a nice storyline, and fun character names. Together they begin to make music and Pookie realizes his music no longer sounds sad. Tushka becomes upset that he cannot play the piano, so Pookie gifts his with a drum. He hopes finding a new piano will solve his melancholy tunes, but alas they are still sad. Pookie initially notices he can only play sad songs. Tushka is always anxious (relatable) and Pookie is there to help make the world less scary. Throughout the book we see how Pookie and Tushka are as friends. It starts and ends with beautiful art and a short poem. I think this book is going to be one of my new favorites. This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers.
